As the end of June approaches, McCarthy has picked up some color and steam. Literally!
Not quite like Kansas, but it’s not rained in several weeks. The rivers and creeks are lower than normal, and the temperatures have hit the upper 70s and low 80s. Locals who live here year-round aren’t used to these temperatures. However, us Kansans, can tolerate these temperatures with ease, especially since the humidity is in the teens, or less. 😃 To say that I’m enjoying it is an understatement, compared to what Martha has indicated the temperatures and humidity levels are back home.
Another item that’s picked up is our evening activity. I think I’ve mentioned before that Thursday night is one of the highlights of the week. On Thursday night, the Golden Saloon, our bar, has open mic night. Anybody is allowed to approach the microphone and have, relatively, as much time as you want to play a song, sing a song, read a book out loud, or just step up on your soapbox and talk (as long as it’s respectful and somewhat clean).
Open mic night is supposed to start around 7:30, but quite frankly, it’s not until 9pm when everybody is in full swing and feeling the nerve (via liquid courage) to get up and take the mic. Once that happens, then anything goes.
There’s a few people that brought instruments (ukulele, guitar, flute, …) to Alaska, or can play the piano or drums which are provided by The Golden. The real highlight is when the ones that actually have a good voice get up and sing a song. There are a couple people working and living in the area that have actually cut an EP, or two. So some of the music is very entertaining and delightful. Then, you have some of the others! But all in all, it’s a wonderful evening, a lot of fun, and it brings the crowd in from around the area.
Believe it or not, I’ve been asked if I would stand up and actually MC Thursday open mic night. So far, I have listened to my inner Martha (Byron, put the mic down) and politely said “thank you for the offer, but not tonight.” However, as each week goes by, it gets harder and harder not to jump up, grab the microphone and say, “Welcome to McCarthy”, and then start telling really funny (err, bad) dad jokes. Maybe I should wait until Martha or Annie get here to share my talents with the crowd???
The other night, we actually had a comedy troupe come to town. There were 5 or 6 stand-up comedians that took turns trying to make us all laugh. Some actually succeeded. We also bring in live bands at least once a week. Last night, we had the John Roberts Y Pan Blanco band in town. They’re an afro-funk salsa band that was awesome! Everybody was up rocking, dancing, and enjoying themselves until close to midnight. Of course, that’s easy to do because the sun is still up at midnight and you don’t realize what time it is.
So, New York can keep their Saturday Night Live. McCarthy rocks Thursday Night to a standing room only saloon and party deck all night long!
